Hello world!
Hello! we are the Leftovers-29! We are a student group of 2 programmers and 4 artists creating a small game for our course game projects. Let’s start the introduction:
“Hello, I am Bente Schoone! I‘m a 25 year old GGP student who is mainly focussing on creating general 3d and character art. I studied Animation at the AKV st. Joost. I was very interested in storytelling and with my growing interest for creating games I applied to Howest DAE. I hope you’ll see a lot of story based characters from me in the future!”

Hi! I’m Rik, one of the programmers and the youngest of the group. I’ve been programming as a hobby for “many” years now. Currently, I’m trying to become a professional at DAE – Howest. I’m also a musician with give or take, 11 years of experience as a percussionist. I hope you’ll all enjoy our game ‘Nox’ and hopefully, many more to come!

My name is Leo, I'm nineteen years old and I'm in my second year of Digital Arts & Entertainment. I joined DAE because of my love for Skyrim environments, I'm currently fascinated with making 3D props and environments.

Hi, I’m Silke, I’m a 23 year old GGP student. Before DAE I studied fine arts at Luca School of Arts in Gent, more specifically painting. I’ve always had a love for games and as I got older, my interest for how those games were actually made grew bigger. When I finished my fine arts degree I still wanted to explore this interest further, and get more acquainted with the actual technical pipeline of creating games. So I applied to DAE howest and tried to combine my more traditional background with this newfound, more technical approach. I love environments, props and always try to prioritize storytelling.

Greetings my name is Jonathan Verstraeten a student at DAE with a passion for character design and the development of games. At the moment of writing this I have been at an art academy for 18 years. I hope that with my drive and determination I can help my group in creating this game.

Past week we have been mainly talking about and exploring the following questions:
- Which of our two favourite games is the best choice for us?
We had to choose between two games we really liked; the boat game and the arcade game. The boat game is a fast paced game where you sail a boat and make sure it doesn't break down.
The arcade game is an atmospheric horror game where you have to try to get through certain areas while solving puzzles and killing enemies.
In the end we had a thorough discussion on both games and through a final voting session we decided on the arcade game.
- What program would be best to use for our choice of game?
We thought about the benefits both engines could have for our game. Because we were going for a very atmospheric game we decided that unreal would be the best choice for us. Unreal has some nice components for light and atmosphere built in and a big weighing point was also that most of the artists are more experienced in unreal. (also, our programmers like splines :))
- What are the main mechanics of the game?
The main mechanics of the game are focussed on the item that the character will be carrying with him, a match. With this match the player will be able to light up the way, hit enemies and slide over power cables and spider rags. At the moment our programmers are looking at the possibilities of these mechanics and how we could implement them.
- How can we make the game we’re currently working on adhere to the theme?
To do this we decided to give the game a retro arcade setting. We are still working this out in the artbible, more to come soon!
Our plan for the coming week is for the artists to mainly focus on how the game is gonna look and finishing up the art bible. Besides that figuring out proportions, trying out different lighting methods and starting to create some of the base assets we’re gonna need are high on the list too.
The programmers are gonna familiarize themselves more with C++ and unreal since they both never worked in it before. The next week will also be the last week for the actual prototyping so we’ll be figuring out how to implement some more of the main mechanics in the game. (and mostly dying because we have to use unreal.. :( )
